WALLABY COACH
Connor to retire
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY.
The former Wallaby and All Black, D. Connor, yesterday announced his retirement as coach of the Australian Rugby team, after the third test against the Springboks tomorrow.
He has also withdrawn his application for the assistant manager's job on the tour of France in November.
Connor said today that he had announced his decision at a meeting of Australian players last night. He gave family and business commitments as his main reasons, but also said he felt it necessary that the Australian team get a new approach in the coaching post.
Connor’s decision Was unexpected, although it was well known that he was bitterly disappointed with the performance of the Wallabies in the second test against South Africa in Brisbane last week-end.
The Queensland coach, Mr R. Templeton, indicated that he would stand for the position of coach for the French tour, and is considered a likely replacement for Connor.
