A.T.C. takes Civil Defence course

For the last three months a South Island Air Training Corps squadron has been undertaking a course in Civil Defence.

No. 17 A.T.C. Squadron’s commanding officer (Squadron Leader A. W. Ellis) said yesterday that the Civil Defence course was in addition to the squadron’s normal activities at Wigram, and had included lectures, films, a visit to the civil defence operations room in Christchurch, and, last night, experience with some rescue techniques. Squadron Leader Ellis said that the squadron had approached the civil defence department of the Christchurch City Council. The response from the boys in the squadron had been very good; the majority were quite keen on civil defence, he said.

The City Council’s civil defence officer (Mr R. W. Waters) said he hoped that participation by other youth groups in civil defence might catch on. Last year the venturer scouts took part.

Earlier this year civil defence courses were intro-

duced to Ashburton College and the Waitaki Boys’ High School.
