7000 books for new university

As a result of a national collection of books this year, about 7000 books will be added to the shelves of the librai’y of the University of the South Pacific.

A recent newsletter of the university committee in New Zealand said that other books from New Zealand would be used as class sets, recreational reading stocks and in the education of Fijian and other South Pacific islanders. A library representative, Mr A. Peasgood, who has been in charge of the two New Zealand student work camps processing the earlier book collections for the U.S.P. library has inspected this year’s collection. He said that a high pro-

portion of the books collected were suitable for inclusion in the main university library, and that there was surprisingly little duplication between this year’s and earlier collections.

After the preliminary sorting in New Zealand, the books will be flown to Fiji by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Applications will shortly be called for a work camp in January, 1972, to carry out accession procedures at the university. This camp will also work at the Fiji Central Archives.
