Geriatric day-care unit planned
A proposal to day-care centre for old people in Christchurch was heard by the board of the Methodist Central Mission last evening. The Medical Superintendent of Coronation Hospital and a member of the day-care committee (Dr T. D. Enticott) said that the day-care unit would be accommodated at 'the Fairhaven Old People’s Home, run by the mission until the project had proved itself and demand was created for a specially built unit. A day-care centre was more relevant to the needs of old people than a day hospital, said Dr Enticott. Most old people only needed supportive care while they were maintained at home. The centre would provide a midday meal and occupy most Of the occupants’ day. About 10 persons would be catered for at the centre each day. Referrals would come from the Central Mission, other welfare agencies and general practitioners. The mission has plans to extend Wesley Home for the aged, and has received approval for a subsidy from the
Health Department to build four aged people’s flats. The Rehua Maori Apprentices’ Hostel is also being extended
