Biddle sixth in tide race over 92 miles
(Special Correspondent NZ.P.AJ • LONDON, August 2. Continuing his recent run of improved form, the Commonwealth Games road-cycling champion, K Biddle, was a creditable sixth in the 92-mile English amateur championship race at Seacroft, Leeds, on Saturday.
Biddle’s chances of finishing well up appeared dim soon after the half-way mark when the 16-tnan breakaway group split. However, he chased doggedly on his own for about
six miles and finally made contact with the break, now reduced to nine -riders. Although hard pushed, Biddle kept fighting on and his efforts were finally rewarded when he took sixth place at the finish. ■ “I was quite pleased, really, with my form,” Biddle said later. “With a bit of hard racing from now on, I should come up well for the world championships next month,” he said. “It really hurt for a while, but over the last 10 miles or so I was starting to come right.” Accompanied by a fellow Aucklander, White, Biddle has just left for about three weeks racing in Belgium. The two will compete in the eight-day Tour of Ireland from August 22 to 29 before tackling the world championship race at Mendrisio,' Switzerland, on September 4.
