(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 22. A big greenstone adze found by three small boys at Tataralmaka is thought to be at least 500 years old. The director of the Taranaki Museum, New Plymouth, (Mr R. Allan) said today that it was the largest greenstone adze of its type reported in the North Island.

Found by Kevin Thomas, his brother, John, and Tony Lowe the adze has a Sin cutting edge and Is 17Jin long. It weighs 91b ISjoz. A “massive adze in the reduced butt style,” it appeared to come from the transitional period between the moa hunter and classic cultures, about 1350, said Mr Allan. It was most probably used only for treefelling, he said. Made of speckled groen-

stone known as nephrite, the adze had taken on a white patina on one face because of Its exposure to the elements for possibly a hundred or so years.
