Census query answered

(N-Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 21. There was no intention to require married women to disclose ex-marital births in next week’s census, the Minister in Charge of the Statistics Department (Mr Muldoon) said in Parliament. In answer to an urgent Parliamentary question from the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) he said that Question 13 on the 1971 personal schedule was asked to provide information on the number of live nuptial births to women who are or have been married.

“There was no intention to require , disclosure of ex-mari-tal births, although it is the practice in some countries and the practice recommended by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations in connection with the censuses being taken around 1970,” the Minister said.
