Speculation boosts nickel share prices higher

Hectic trading in mining shares pushed prices up on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Selected speculatives, led by the boom in Leopold Mining, pushed the market up. Heavyweights were generally higher. Oils and industrials were firm but trading was moderate.

A number of speculatives stood out. Bamboo rose 40c to 70c and Spargo’s was pushed up as high as 250 c. It closed 80c up at 220 c. Sipos was marked up 43c to 105 c and Kia Ora put on 30c to close at 100 c. Carr Boyd rose 25c to 110 c, Jensen 8c to 60c, Mareeba 20c to 95c, Murchison 12c to 87c, Seeko 14c to 42c, and Westmex 23c to close at 123 c. Mining Finance was marked up 25c to 85c. Generally heavyweights Were carried along. C.R.A., with its Bouganville copper float coming up, rose 50c to 1150 c, and Utah firmed 23c to 415 c. Peko put on 40c to 1110 c

and Great Boulder firmed 15c to 290 c. Kathleen Investments fell 10c to 1070 c and Queensland Mines lost 100 c to 2450 c. Poseidon eased 150 c to 3850 c. Oils were firm in moderate trading. Ampol Ex gained 3c to 133 c, and Woodside was up 1c to 43c. Timor sold at 47c but closed steady at 43c. Industrials were steady with selected gains in moderate trading. B.H.P. sold as high as 1530 c and closed 40c up at 1500 c. C.S.R. was up 16c to 626 c.
