ORGANIST TO RETIRE
Mr C. H. Davies, a wellknown Christchurch music teacher who has been organist and choirmaster at St John’s Anglican Church, Latimer Square, for the last 38 years, will retire at the end of this month. Mr Davies, who studied
music as a child in England, came to New Zealand in the early 19205. His first job was in a bakehouse in Kaikoura. Later he moved to Cheviot where he taught music for several years before coming to Christchurch to teach. For many years he was music master at Medbury School and for the last few years he has taught music at Christ’s College. Before becoming organist at St John’s he was for some time organist at St Paul’s Church, Papanui. Mr Davies was also for many years music critic for the "Christchurch Star.”
He is keenly interested in repertory theatre and for some time was on the committee of the Canterbury Repertory Society. He has also acted in several of the society’s plays.
