Plans for House
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March. 22. Parliament would adjourn in the next few days as soon as it passed the Stabilisation of Remuneration Bill, the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake) told reporters today. He does not intend to take urgency to ensure that the bill is passed in the next sitting. Everybody must have adequate opportunity to express whether they were for or against the bill, he said.
Sir Keith Holyoake denied allegations made by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) at the weekend that the Government was trying to divide the country over industrial matters. Sir Keith Holyoake said it was the Labour Party which was “bewildered” because the Government knew quite clearly what it wanted to' do. “After some days of debate I still don’t know whether the Labour Party is going to approve the bill or not,” he said. He said that he hoped to get unanimity from the House this week on the bill.
