Waltham Lido
Sir, —Yesterday at the Waltham Lido Pool two events staggered me: (a) a young attendant removed a very small dog by placing it on a wall some 10ft high and pushing it over into the grounds beyond. Fortunately, this poor animal walked away, limbs intact. Previously, I have seen attendants at this same pool open locked gates to remove a much larger dog—much more humane, surely, and no more time-consuming. The same attendant yesterday in checking children was officious and his attitude completely unwarranted, (b) Some filthy child or adult polluted the large pool, making a ghastly “clean-up” for another attendant who had my complete sympathy. I would be most interested to hear if the pool was emptied yesterday for health’s sake, or are there additives in the water to combat this type of pollution?—Yours, etc., W.C. February 11, 1971.
[The Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes) replies: “Your correspondent’s version of the incident involving the dog conflicts with the reports I have received. I would suggest that ‘W.C.’ contacts the pool supervisor, Waltham Lido, Mr F. King, to discuss this and also the complaint about the attitude of the attendant so that appropriate action may be taken, if necessary. Pollution of the pool is, fortunately, a rare occurrence, but the attendants and a filtered and chlorinated pool can deal adequately with the matter.”]
