Third title B. G. de Thier completed his hat-trick of provincial, island and national Finn titles when he won the South Island championship at Lake Aviemore last week-end. However, de Thier was keenly challenged by B.
E. Treleaven in each of the four heats and suffered one of his rare defeats at the hands of another Canterbury skipper when Treleaven led him across the line at the completion of the second race.
In this event A. MacFarlane (Timaru) rounded the top mark at the head of the 22-strong fleet with H. Dimmock (Nelson) also in front of Treleaven and de Thier. Soon afterwards Treleaven gained the initiative and retained it until the finish, de Thier also improving two places to be the runner-up. De Thier won each of the other races but there was seldom as much as 30sec between him and Treleaven throughout the contest, which was held in conjunction with the annual South Island freshwater championships at the lake.
The consistent Charteris Bay helmsman, B. Winters, took third position over-all while much improvement was shown by the experienced Canterbury competitor, D. Campbell.
The racing between those regularly in the main bunch was also close in the light-to-mod-erate north-westerly conditions which prevailed during the two days. Appeals panel The Canterbury Yacht Association decided at its most recent meeting to call for nominations from clubs for officials who may become members of the enlarged national appeals panel.
Each association has been requested by the New Zealand federation to forward the names of up to eight persons for consideration. The qualifications required are experience and availability for national contests held in this province. When received from three present Canterbury clubs, the nominations will be passed on to the members of the panel, Messrs W. H. Beanland, H. H. Kingham and P. G. Mander. They will then recommend to the association which names should be sent to the national body for the final selection. Canterbury had not been in favour of the increase in size of the appeals panel and its delegate, Mr H. L. England, had voted against the motion at the last federation meeting. Cup programme The itinerary for the One Ton Cup contest which will begin at Auckland next week is: Thursday, February 25, 11 a.m.: first race, 26.6 miles, Olympic course. Friday, February 26, 11 a.m.: second race, 146 miles. Monday, March 1, 11 a.m.: third race, 26.6 miles, Olympic course. Tuesday, March 2, 3 p.m.: fourth race, 270 miles. Saturday, March 6. 11 a.m.: fifth race, 26.6 miles, Olympic course.
