Medical benefits

Sir,—l have been receiving outpatient hospital treatment for the last five months and have been receiving sickness benefit. Last week my doctor told me that I would be unable to have further treatment as those responsible for the benefit would insist on my being an invalid after six months treatment. Otherwise my sickness benefit would be stopped. My doctor seemed quite concerned about this form of dictatorship. I am, too.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR L. WALKER.

February 16, 1971. [The acting-registrar of the Social Security Department in Christchurch (Mr C. L. Waters) replies: "Sickness benefits are payable for temporary incapacity, while invalids’ benefits are provided for those who are permanently incapable of work. Where a sickness benefit has been current for a prolonged period the question of whether or not an invalid’s benefit would be more applicable is considered in the light of the available medical evidence; and if it appears likely that a sickness beneficiary has the medical and other appropriate’ qualifications for invalids’ benefit he is invited to apply for that benefit. If your correspondent wishes to

discuss his own case, it is Suggested he call and see me.”]
