Redwood hotel plan approved

Approval for Redwood Enterprises, Ltd, to go ahead with its plans to convert the Redwood Court motels on the Main North Road into a licensed hotel - motels complex was given by the Waimairi County Council last evening, by six votes to three. Cr W. T. Rice said the. application should not be allowed because of its effect on a residential district and because other suitably zoned land was available for a hotel.

Ratepayers deserved protection for their homes in a residential A zone, said Cr A. A. Adcock. The council agreed with a recommendation ■ to this effect from its town-planning Committee, which said that after considering the evidence given at a public hearing on January 26, with particular reference to the potential growth of the district, it considered that the proposal was in the public interest. Evidence was given at the hearing that Redwood Enterprises, Ltd, had an agreement with Dominion Breweries, Ltd, to buy the motel property, and that, if planning approval was given and a licence issued by the Licensing Control Commission, 12 new motel units and a 13,000 sq. ft bar,' lounge and dining room block would be built.

The council, in granting approval, reserved the right to restrict or prohibit the hours or type of entertainment if noise was a nuisance to residents, and required private functions to cease at 11 p.m. Access to or from Munro

Street was prohibited, use of the Main North Road entrance was restricted to motel guests, and access conditions were laid down for the Prestons Road frontage. The owners were required to pay to the council costs involved in upgrading Prestons Road, and to screen-plant and fence the property to the satisfaction of the council. An application from Anthony Shearer, Ltd, for consent to build a 90ft by 40ft store for building materials at 554 Main North Road was granted, subject to restrictions on the storage of materials in the open.
