WHEELCHAIR FOR $l0

A wheel-chair for invalids can vary in price from £l2OO for an ultra-sophisticated design brought out by a Swedish manufacturer to the more human variety that can be bought for about £5O. A department of Loughborough University however, has been experimenting with a chair that would cost only £lO, and 40 pre-production models have been on trial in various parts of East Africa.

The University was asked by the National Fund for Research into Crippling Diseases to look into the design of wheel-chairs, and they came up with one that is not only stable but that can easily clear an obstacle.

The low price is achieved by using parts already in mass production. The seat is really a chair made in hundreds of thousands, and the chassis stems from a children’s tricycle that has been slightly’fwidened.
