Fast mile in training

Oddfellow, a stablemate of the New Zealand Derby winner, Fairview Lad, is in the right form to give the Sanders stable another success at the New Zealand Cup meeting.

This solid-looking chestnut ran the fastest mile of the training at Riccarton yesterday. With K. Cullen up he hurried over the distance in Imin 42 3-ssec and the last half mile in 50 3-ssec.

Trialists had fast footing on both the trial and the grass.

Sailing Home, the beaten favourite in the New Zealand Cup, surprised her rider, E. J. Didham, with her time of 48 3-ssec for half a mile.

“She’s a deceptive mover; I would not have thought she was going so fast,” said Didham, who will ride the Riccarton mare in the Canter bury Gold Cup tomorrow. Sailing Home was paired with her stablemate Witchcraft (N. Eastwood) yesterday and won the gallop by three parts of a length.

F. H. Skelton, who rode Sailing Home in the New Zealand Cup, said the big Dogger Bank mare became unsettled before the start of the race and this could have made inroads into her store of vitality.

The Riverton two-year-old, Caledonian Lass <E. J. Didham) heightened interest in her first appearance at the C-J.C. meeting when she sprinted half a mile with Stranger (Ridley) in 47 3-ssec. W. J. Hillis’s pair stayed on terms to the end of this good gallop.

Game, a top fancy for the Canterbun.’ Gold Cup. bowled keenly into his work for R. B.

Marsh while sprinting six furlongs in Imin 18sec, the last half mile in 51 3-ssec.
