Canterbury pilot leads
CN.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Being the only flier to complete the task course of 170 kUometres, the Canterbury glider pilot, B. Drake, on Sunday took an early commanding lead In the New Zealand gliding chamS ionship, being held at Five ivers, northern Southland. Drake scored 276 points, to lead his fellow-Cantabrlan, R. Georgeson, by 109 pointe in conditions which deteriorated as the day progressed. In the standard class, R. J. Cuthill, of Southland, won the first competition, also recording 276 pointe, but this section was more evenly contested than the open class. Yesterday’s task was a triangle between Five Rivers, Mandeville, and the Key Corner. The championships started on Saturday with a non-competltlon event, and will continue until next Saturday. The Southland Gliding Club expects better conditions today. Results:— Open class.—B. Drake (Canterbury), 276 pointe, 1; R. .Georgeson (Canterbury), 167. 2; P.
