Jellie Park water polo team beats Beckenham
Jellie Park continued its impressive start to the water polo season In Christchurch with a 5-4 win over the tough Beckenham-Sockburn team at the Centennial Pool last evening. Last week Jellie Park beat Elmwood-Taylors Mistake 7-2, and already seems a strong contender for the championship. Wharenui defeated Services, 10-1; and University beat Elm-wood-Taylors Mistake, 6-2. Jellie Park 5 (R. Pirie 2, D. MpKay, C. Robinson, D. Reid), Beckenham-Sockburn 4 (M. C. Scott 3, G. McEwin). Within about 2 min of the start Jellie Park was three goals in front. Scott started bringing his team back in the game with a penalty, then a pool shot for hig second goal, but when Reid scored from half-way for Jellie Park to lead 4-2 at half-time, Becxenham-Sockburn faced an uphill battle. Scott scored another penalty, but the combination team’s enthusiasm for attack proved its undoing. Pressing for the equalishing goal ,1t left gaps at the back and Robinson scored easily. McEwin scored for BeckenhamSockburn on full-time.
University 6 (P. J. Hay 2, R. Wilson 2, R. Gunthorp, I. Simpson). Elmwood-Taylor's Mistake 2 (M. J. M. Hay 2).
University** skill and longer experience gave it a comfortable victory over the combined team which had more members skilled in surf-lifesaving than in water polo. On this showing and riven the development likely with better discipline, the combined team’s strong swimmers should become useful players, especially C. Read, who has won selection in Canterbury Rugby and surf-life-saving teams. It was important for University not to drop points a* two of its leading players, Wilson and Gunthorp, will leave next week for a three-month holiday in Australia. Wharenui 10 (R. Tweedie 4, R. Erikson 2, R. Hazlett 2, R. Leach 2, %,?. erv1e “ ’ ®- Johnson). This was little more than a gentle work-out for the fit, skilful Wharenui players and even the sole Services goal came as a slight surprise. Wharenui has lost two New ZeaJand players, I. L. Gunthorp and T. M. McGirr, this year and, for this reason, the continued excellent form of the youngsters, Tweedie and P. Yardley, was interesting. Senior Reserve; South Brighton 4, Beckenham-Sockburn 2; New University B beat Wharenui bv default; Christchurch Boys’ High Brighton 2, Jellie Pafrk 1; School, the bye.
