Three fires in four minutes
Fire destroyed an unoccupied house and a garage, and damaged a Christchurch service station in three outbreaks reported within a space of four minutes last evening. At 9.43 p.m. Christchurch firemen were called to 325 Hereford Street;! at 9.45 p.m. to Winter Garden Motors in Armagh Street; and at 9.46 p.m. to a house in Travis Road, North Beach. Flames from the house in Travis Road could be seen up to half a mile away, and by the time three engines from New Brighton and St Albans arrived there was little that could be done to save the two-bedroom building. There was nothing of value i.i the house, which has been unoccupied for some time. Vandals had smashed windows and the property was in a state of disrepair. In the Hereford Street blaze a 6ft by 10ft shed was gutted, and its contents completely destroyed. A second-storey room at Winter Garden Motors, 165 Armagh Street, was slightly damaged by fire. Two engines and the turntable ladder unit from headquarters and Sydenham were called.
Fire In Extractor.—Minor damage was done when fire broke out in an extractor flue at Stacey and Hawker, Ltd, 38 Essex Street; Linwood, at 2.45 a.m. yesterday. The fire, which was caused when an oven overheated, was put out by employees before firemen from the Christchurch Central fire station arrived.
