“Flagon-waggon” gangs
Sir, —Congratulations on your article on this problem. It is pleasing to see a newspaper publish what citizens should know rather than what they like to read. Should we close our eyes to social problems and think billboards advertising "Cup Horse Dead,” “Kiwi Lottery Results,” or “Disaster in South Africa—All Black boots with no sprigs,” are all there is to worry about? This social problem, brought on by council and Government lack of planning and citizens’ apathy must not be allowed to dev elop in other areas. We hear a lot of these teen-age gangs, ( but let us hear more of the adult delinquents, who refuse , to come to a community' meeting on their future. Let Government appoint welfare officers to live in these areas. I Let the council spend its: money on community development rather than luxury schemes. Let local police change their views. Citizens 1 must throw off their apathy. 1 —Yours, etc., 1 O’NEILL. 1 November 6, 1970.
