Death of retired judge
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 9. A retired judge of the Supreme Court, Sir George Finlay, died today in Auckland, aged 83. He was bom in Thames and began his legal career in Te Kuiti in 1908. He came to Auckland in 1923 and after establishing his own practice was associated with many famous criminal and civil trials. During World War II he was Aliens Authority and
from 1941 was chairman of the Armed Forces Appeal Board. In October, 1943, he was appointed to the Bench and became judge of the Land Sales Court, Wellington. He was president of the Prisons Board in 1948 and retained this position until January, 1957. He presided over the 1947 Royal Commission on gaming and, while on sabbatical leave in 1953, represented the New Zealand judiciary at the coronation. He was made a knight bachelor in 1955 and retired from the Supreme Court bench in 1958.
