Cabinet studies price scheme

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 9. The Acting Prime Minister (Mr Shelton) tonight confirmed that the Cabinet had discussed possible “price justification” schemes.

He said the Cabinet Economic Policy. Committee would meet tomorrow to “see

if a workable scheme can be evolved.” Mr Shelton, speaking to reporters after the weekly meeting of the Cabinet, partly confirmed statements made earlier today by the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon), who told a Rotary luncheon that the Government had agreed to look urgently at schemes put forward for a form of blanket price control. DIFFERENT TERM Mr Shelton, however, said the term “price justification” should be substituted for the phrase “blanket price control.” Mr Shelton agreed with Mr Muldoon’s earlier statement that both manufacturers and employers had approached the Government with schemes broadly similar to that put forward by the Federation of Labour. He said the employers' main concern was for wages, “but they realise we cannot have restraint on one side and not on the other."
