WELLESLEY STAKES

Runaway win by Sheralee Some very smart youngsters have won the Wellesley Stakes but few have been more impressive than Sheralee, which ran her rivals off their feet in the $4OOO classic at Trentham on Saturday. Sheralee, a small but compact two-year-old daughter lof Sove reign Edition and the Faux Tirage mare Tehrana, turned the concluding stages of the stakes into a procession. Once B. F. Andrews gave her more rein two furlongs and a half out it soon became obvious that she would have to fall over to lose.

In the end Sheralee was out by six lengths from Whistle Green, which was in the leading group from the start then battled gamely in a hopeless chase after his Takanini rival from the furlong. Although he was three lengths further back there was much promise in Ice Pack’s run for third. He was in the rear group starting the run home but made good progress down on the inside in the last furlong.

Ice Pack outfinished Moidart which was followed in by Tupelo and Bounty. Sheralee, which is prepared for the Auckland industrialist, Sir William Stevenson, by I. J. Tucker at Takanini, has now won three of her four races. Although she revelled in the hold-' Ing ground on Saturday and the; going was soft when she won at Ellerslie on October 10. she has also shown ability on top of the ground. The going at Avondale was firm when she won the Kindergarten Handicap at Avondale at her first attempt.
