Ellesmere A. and P. show first day

After a wet, cold start, the weather improved greatly for the first day of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association's centennia show at Leeston yesterday, making it an enjoyable day for spectators and competitors alike. The show, held over two days for the first time this year, has drawn record entries—326s compared with the previous record of 2614 established in 1968, and 689 more than received for last year’s show. The greatest increases were in the sheep, cattle and pig sections, which will be judged today. The show secretary (Mr W. E. West) said that gate takings yesterday were $lBB, which was considered quite good in view of the weather and it being a week day. Attendance was expected to improve today. Total gate takings last year were $B4l and it is hoped to exceed the figure this year. The show began with a procession of vintage farm equipment and vehicles from Lake Road through High Street to the show grounds. The procession drew 113 entries and 51 exhibits were in the static display. There were many farm steam traction

■ engines in working order, some dating from the beginning of the ■ century, and the vintage vehicles included a 1907 Cadillac and 1910 - Rover motor-cycle. Twenty floats , took part in the procession and . several were most amusing. | The static exhibits included many different kinds of farming 5 equipment, some built in the 1880 s. All the vintage vehicles, * equipment, and floats were on ■ display and a museum showing ' relics of Canterbury’s early days ■ also made interesting viewing. PARADES TODAY I Most of the horse events were held yesterday but the climax of the FJC.L horse jumping will > S € » the special centennial event held over six fences with prizeS | money of $lOO. today. The finals . of the dog trials will also be * held today. Other events on , today’s programme include the 1 Grand Parade of Stock at 2.30 I p.m., a parade of horse prizewinners. I The floats and vintage equip- . ment will parade around the * ring at 3.30 p.m. and a beard- . growing contest will be judged. (This will be followed by a jolo . match between two South Island . teams at 4.30 p.m. Mr G. D. Kelly, judge *‘>of the hunter and F.E.I. classes, said , many of the horses Were well trained and jumped extremely well. In the hunter 12-stone . class especially, the horses were > of a high standard in their style ’ and manners. In the F.E.I. jumping class the entries in the improver grade , jumped well and in the table IA and C grade competition the j entries were good and the horses ’jumped very well. The judges of the pony jumping F.E.I. classes. Messrs J. H. Baxter and T. C. Grigg, said the horses were of an excellent standard and very’ well turned out generally. Competition was keener now than several years ago because of a new points prize, they said. The number of entries received was good considering that it was a week day. Championship awards were:— 1
