ON-SPOT FINES

‘Licence to speed’ (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 15. The proposed on-the-spot fines system would give licence for motorists to exceed the maximum speed limit on payment of an appropriate fee, the Superintendent of Traffic in Auckland (Mr N. A. Lake) said last night in a report to the Auckland City Council. Some people would charge the amount against taxdeductible company expenses. Others would charge the fee against the job they were on at the time they were caught speeding. “This is definitely a devaluation of the principles of road safety,” he said. “Accident records repeatedly prove excessive speed to be the principal cause of accidents involving death and injury on New Zealand roads.” The council will make submissions on the bill to the Statutes Revision Committee.
