PET MEAT ABATTOIR
Objections to proposal
Twenty objections have been lodged with the City Council against a proposed pet meat abattoir at 153 Maces Road, Bromley.
Mr S. J. Hay, a cabinetmaker and manager of the City Council dog pound in Maces Road, is the applicant His plans include the building of a single-storey concrete block abattoir which will comprise a killing room, boning room, and cooler, of an area of about 1000 sq. ft. Mr Hay’s plans are due for consideration by the Citv Council on November 3, for a specified departure from the zoning scheme. The abattoir would be the first in Christchurch specifically to provide meat for pets. Recent regulations require that such meat be slaughtered and handled accordmg to strict specifications, and the city abattoirs have done the work since they came into effect.
Two petitions opposing the proposed abattoir have been: circulated. One was organised! by Mr S. Derrett, who runs* a “horse haven” for old! horses. I
