182 dead in Philippines j (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HONG KONG, Oct. 16. i Typhoon Joan whipped : across the South China Sea ■early today, moving toward China and North Vietnam and prompting Radio Peking to broadcast storm alerts for coastal areas of South-East-ern China. The typhoon regained some strength after its passage across the Philippines on Wednesday, where it left 182 persons dead, 187 missing, 8000 homeless and damage estimated at ssom. Radio Peking, in a broadcast monitored in Hong Kong issued typhoon warnings early today for Kwangtung and Kwangsi provinces and the southern coast of Hainan . Island.
The royal observatory in Hong Kong said that the typhoon front was 310 miles wide and could affect Vietnam as well as the southeastern coast of China. President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines has proclaimed a state of disaster in Quezon and Marinduque provinces and in the six provinces of the Bicol Peninsula.
