Library sites
Sir, —It is time we finally decided which of the three sites is the most suitable on which to build our new library: the civic centre, Manchester Street civic buildings, or the present site. The civic centre frontage has big landscape possibilities but also has three disadvantages: if situated on the Salvation Army or nearby property, the time lapse before the land could be acquired, shortage of parking space, and the distance from business and shopping centre, Manchester Street has nothing to commend it: frontage mean, little parking space unless a large amount of expensive “property” is purchased, and distance from business and shopping centre too great. The present site’s river frontage is almost perfect; sufficient parking if Worcester Street to Hereford Street is rescued for library users only; and situated close to business and shopping areas. Should more space be required there is council land at rear.— Yours, etc., R. J. GLEN. October 16, 1970.
