N.Z. Player’s Fine Win (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. The New Zealand champion, D. Burmeister, of Auckland, played outstanding squash to beat the Victorian. B. Vaskelis, in three games on the opening day of the Australian squash rackets championships yesterday. Burmeister won, 9-1, 9-4, 9-1. Th® Christchurch player,. D. Preston, raced to a two-game lead of 9-0, 9-7, against another Victorian, M. Samblebe, but unaccountably lost concentration to lose the next two, 0-9, 5-9. However, he recovered to win the fifth and final game, 9-2. New Zealand's three other players—S. Dwyer, L. Green and J. Malcolm—lost their opening matches. The New Zealand women all won their matches. Mrs T. Lawes, the national champion, had a good work-out in her match against the former N.S.W. star, C. Roach, and won 10-8. 9-6, 9-5. C. Fleming beat R. Ticknej, 9-1, 9-2. 9-3*; J. Webster defeated J. Honeycomb (Queensland), and J. Legg, who made the New Zealand team when P. Buckingham was unavailable justified her inclusion with a straight game win over the New South Wales player, P. Leiiehah.
