(N.Z. P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) TOULON (France), August 23. The French submarine Galatee, shown beached in cabled photograph, which was Involved in a collision with a South African submarine on Thursday, might not see active service again, a maritime official said yesterday. The vessel suffered a 40ft gash in the side in the collision with South Africa’s only submarine, the Maria Van Riebeech, in the Mediterranean. Six sailors on the French vessel were killed. Mr Georges Lefevre, chief of the Toulon Maritime Region, told a press conference: “We will do all we can to repair the submarine, but the damage seems very serious and we cannot say if it will be able, to go into active service again.” He said it would take several days to refloat the 700-ton Galatee, which was beached on nearby underwater rocks after the collision.
