ANIMAL SUNDAY
Open-Air Service A special Animal Sunday during which all animal owners will be invited to bring their pets to an open-air church service, will be held at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Upper Riccarton, on October 4, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of animals. The vicar of the church (the Rev. J. F. B. Keith) said yesterday that the service, which was being organised at the invitation of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, would be held in the churchyard at 2 p.m. Any animal could be brought to the service and special areas would be set aside for the different kinds. Hymns and prayers relating to animals would be included in the service and it was hoped to have the organ music relayed outside the church. A guest preacher would be invited, he said. The manager of the society’s home in Christchurch (Mr A. Halliday) said yesterday that it was hoped that through the service people would have a better understanding of animals. It would also emphasise to people that there was a society that cared for animals.
