H.MAS. Sydney To Visit
H.M.A.S. Sydney, once an aircraft carrier, but now a fast military transport, will visit Lyttelton from October 2 to 6. Commanded by Captain B. S. Murray and having a complement of 40 officers and 567 other ranks, the Sydney is visiting New Zealand on a training and good-will mission. The Sydney has a displacement of 14,380 tons, is 698 ft long, and was commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy on December 16, 1948. In 1962-63 the carrier was converted to her present role.
