Alcoholism

Sir,—lt is gratifying to learn that 22 national church leaders attended the educational lecture by Mr R. H. Johnston, president of the National Society of Alcoholism, as it is only by knowledge, education, and a co-ordinated working programme that this troublesome disease can be effectively arrested. The spiritual needs of the afflicted and their families are a very necessary factor in effecting a recovery. Help is certainly needed to change cultural attitudes. Alcoholism, like many other diseases, affects all who crane in contact—wives or husbands, families, friends and employers. The distinction between alcoholism and heavy, drinking is little understood by the general public. A full educational programme should certainly encompass the areas of society which are closely associated, such as medical, religious, political, judicial, and educational elements. It is to be hoped that National Alcoholic Societies will be besieged with inquiries for lecturers, as a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.—Yours, etc., LOUISE MOORE, August 20, 1970.
