Hope Arm Forest
Sir, —Mr Franklin and I are still at cross-purposes. There is a sizeable stand of podocarp forest at the Hope Arm of Lake Manapouri in which a main component in kahikatea. The Institute of Foresters’ submission is misleading on this point I agree with Mr Franklin that there are many better stands of kahikatea elsewhere in New Zealand but the Hope Arm stand is . the best area of flood-plain podocarp forest known In Fiordland National Park. Its importance to the park lies partly in its accessability to the public. Its destruction will mean the loss of a valuable amenity.— Yours, etc., C. J. BURROWS. Senior Lecturer in .Botany. August 17, 1970. [Mr D. A. Franklin replies: ‘"lhe Institute of Foresters has no wish to mislead anyone, but it does wish to correct the impression that the Hope Arm forest contains one of the best stands of kahikatea in the country. We have no information as to whether the stand that would be flooded if the lake level is raised is the best in Fiordland National Park, and therefore cannot adequately judge its importance to the park.” 1
