(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) NEWPORT. Valiant defeated Heritage and Intrepid beat Weatherly in the United States selection trials for the America's Cup yesterday. A protest was thought possible after Valiant appeared to foul Heritage in their prerace manoeuvring Valiant was in further trouble later in the race when she tore a spinnaker, but she still went on to win by 3min 47sec.
