C.B.H.S. Has Deserved Win

A tenacious forward display and a better tactical appraisal of what was needed to win a game played *n a strong, biting wind gave Christchurch Boys’ High School a well-deserved, 17-6, win over Otago Bovs’ High School at Striven Road yesterday. with the wind behind it in the first half, Christchurch could manage only a 9-0 lead at half-time, after some fine tackling and tactical kicking by Otago had allowed Only one try. However, in the second half Christchurch applied itself more steadfastly to the task, winning a great share of possession with only seven forwards and having a territorial advantage over-all. It was not a day for backs, with hard, bruising rushes and constant pursuing of the high ball by the forwards being more characteristic of the game- I. Webster, R. Myers and J. Fleming were the pick of the effective Christchurch pack. However, the player of the match for Christchurch was the diminutive first five-eighths, D. Ward, who kicked eight of hie team’s points and clearly placed the ball ahead of his forwards with low-driving, angled kicks. For Christchurch, M. Warren, R. Rennell, and A. Harvey scored tries and Ward kicked a field goal, a penalty and a conversion. T. Law kicked two penalties for Otago.

Christchurch also won the soccer (1-0), the hockey (13-0». and the indoor basketball (70-00), but lost the debating. The soccer was a hard, tightlycontested match, and was won by Christchurch with a goal from P. Clarke in the first minutes. Otago attacked furiously for long periods in the second half, twice had goalscoring attempts cleared off the line, but was finally denied an

equaliser by the resoluze Christchurch defence.
