Interest In Clydesdales Still

When the annual meeting of the Clydesdale Horse Society of the Dominion of New Zealand was held recently in Palmerston North members were interested to learn from the home society in Glasgow, Scotland, that every good foal there met with an immediate demand at worthwhile prices. Last year 17 horses were shipped to Canada and the United States. A new development was also the increasing interest being shown in the annual stallion show in Glasgow. A

party of 50 breeders of heavy horses from the United States and Canada would be attending during a . tour of Clydesdale studs in th* United Kingdom. On the local scene members also reported that they did not experience any difficulty in selling good horses and, in fact, could sell all the horses that they bred. Arrangements are being made for the publication of an up-to-date stud book (volume 30), which contain all entries on hand, including 30 stallions and 43 mares as well as recording about 50 transfers of ownership. The president, Mr B. Sutton, of Te Puke, congratulated breeders who had sup-

ported last year’s Royal Show at Invercargill in such a splendid manner, when 49 Clydesdale horses had been paraded before the Australian judge, Mr G. Cox, of Culgoa, Victoria. In a written report on the show, Mr Cox said' he considered that breeders in New Zealand were doing a good Job in maintaining the true characteristics of the breed in the horses being bred today, but more attention could be given to the feet and to educating the horses, The main showing of Clydesdales during the coming year will be at the Royal Show at Hamilton from October 29 to 31. Mr R. S. McConachy has been

nominated as judge for this event. It is also hoped to stage Clydesdale classes at the Palmerston North city centennial show, which will be held from November 5 to 7. Clydesdale classes are still conducted at shows in the South Island including Canterbury, Timaru, Nplson, Wyndham, Otago, Southland, Gore, North Otago, South Otago and Blueskin. Mr F. J. O’Connor, of Appleby, Nelson, was elected president, Messrs D. Lindsay (Myross Bush), J. B. Blair (Outrun), W. Botisklll (Onewhero) and K. MoRobbie (Papakura) vicepresidents, and Mr C. T. McCallum, of Walkoualti, delegate to the Royal agricultural Society.
