Carstairs Beaten In Title Fight

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 20. The 25-year-old R. Redden (Wellington) won the New Zealand professional lightweight boxing title when he beat R. Carstairs (Christchurch) on points last night.

Redden started more confidently than Carstairs, winning the first round with impressive in-fighting, and was an even clearer winner of the second, always emerging from the many clinches as the cleverer boxer. He also landed

the punch of the round, a right flush to Carstairs's nose. Redden also took the third round, again using his body punches to good effect, although he was once warned for his technique in the clinches.

Carstairs threw the more powerful funches, often from disadvantageous positions, but he opened the fifth round with a left hook to Redden's body and another left to Redden’s nose.

However, the longer the fight lasted, the more Redden increased his lead, and only Carstairs’s spirit and determination kept him going to the end of the 15-round fight.
