Memorial Avenue Sections
Sir, —I am surprised that there has been no support in your columns for the Burnside High School P.T.A.’s protest at the Education Department’s extremely shortsighted plan to sell off sections on the Memorial Avenue frontage of a very fine block of land reserved for educational purposes However, there is another aspect of this unfortunate decision that should be brought to the notice of the citizens of Christchurch. These sections are only 103 ft in depth. One would have thought that the Lands and Survey Department would have enough experience to know that this will result in a row of dwellings situated, of necessity, close to the road frontage and more or less in a straight line, thus spoiling the aesthetic potential of this area. If this decision cannot be reversed, and at this stage 1 cannot see what there is to prevent it, may I plead that at least another 20ft be added to the depth of the sections? I would ask those citizens who value Memorial Avenue for what it stands for and as one of the main entrances into our city to register their protest at this government departmental bungling before it is too late. —Yours, etc., VIGILANT, i | June 24, 1970.
