Kaiapoi Estimates Call For 10 p.c. Rate Increase

Kaiapoi borough rates for the current year will rise by just under 10 per cent over ah, subject to determination of the actual valuation figure. When the annual estimates were approved at the monthly meeting on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr H. O. Hills) said the increase was unfortunate but the best that could be done, the increase being necessary to carry out improvements, meet wage increases and maintain progress.

The Town Clerk (Mr N. E. Clemens) reported that provision had been made for the substantial increases in wages and salaries which would follow as a result not only of the new rates made in award renewals, but also of the decision of the Arbi-; tration ' Court when the general wage order application had been heard.
