CHCH GAS CO.
Tradesmen’s Request The Christchurch Gas Company was paying some of its tradesmen 23c an hour less than they would be paid in outside industry, the secretary of the Canterbury Boilermakers’ Union (Mr G. G. Walker), said yesterday. A combined delegation comprising the Canterbury secretary of the Engineers’ Union (Mr L. Fortune), the secretary of the Canterbury Carpenters' Union (Mr R. J. Pitcairn), the secretary of the Canterbury Gas Workers’ Union (Mr M. Rhodes), and Mr Walker will meet the company’s general manager (Mr E. F. Gorman), this morning to request the payment of ruling rates. Mr Walker said that boilermakers employed by the gas company were receiving as little as sl.o2—the bare award rate—compared with the Christchurch ruling rate of $1.25. Some bonus payments ‘ were received, but these also were less than those paid in industry. Mr Gorman said last evening that he had no comment to make, except to confirm that the payment of ruling I rates would be discussed this morning for the first time.
