Rioting In Tokyo

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, June 15. Students protesting against the continuation of the United States-Japan security treaty fought the police with petrol bombs, stones and steel pipes in Tokyo yesterday, and more than 200 were arrested. A protest march from eastern Tokyo to the central area of the city by 25,000 members of Left-wing organisations passed off peacefully, but sporadic violence by extremist groups occurred elsewhere. Yesterday's demonstration was the first serious outbreak against the automatic continuation of the 10-year-old treaty. Left-wing groups demand, an end to Japan’s close ties with the United States and the adoption of an unarmed neutrality policy friendly towards the nation’s Communist neighbours.
