Desert Testing

A thousand acres of southern Argentina’s Patagonian desert is where the Fiat company sends its new vehicles for test. Winter coming in the middle of the European summer makes this site in the Southern Hemisphere particularly valuable for checking models designed for overseas markets, such as New Zealand. A major factor that contributes to realism of the test is the extreme climate, with the night temperatures falling to minus 30 degrees C. The high salt content of the soil is another factor. Future plans are for permanent installations on the base, which is 16,000 miles from Fiat’s headquarters in Turin, and now comprises only a small hostel for staff and a building for apparatus and instruments.
