Students Against All Black Tour

Students of the University of Canterbury yesterday voted against the policy of the New Zealand University Students’ Association, that the controlled use of marijuana be legalised, and overwhelmingly opposed the raising of Lake Manapouri and the All Black tour of South Africa. In the first referendum held at the university on the three controversial topics 55 per cent or 3777 of the total student roll of more than 6000 voted. Results of the referendum were: For the tour to proceed, 1596; against, 2090. For the legalisation of marijuana, 1447; against 2221. For the raising of Lake Manapouri, 826: against, 2787. The president of the Canterbury University Students’

Association (Mr D. B. C. Cuthbert) said that the referendum was a “worth-while example of democracy in action.”

“There is not the degree of support for the tour that the Rugby Union would like to think and the almost wholesale opposition to raising the level of Lake Manapouri shows definitely how New Zealanders feel about their national heritage,” he said.
