SERVICES’ SECURITY
Minister’s Statement
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, June 4
The armed services were unlikely to increase security safeguards for establishments and properties to war-time standard to combat the activities of a group using explosives, the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) said at Otahuhu today. The Minister had been asked whether the incidence of bomb incidents aimed at the services had resulted in a demand for tighter security.
He said that there had been no request from the services, and that there was neither the manpower nor the money to bring security measures to war-time standards.
“There is not a general I breakdown in security, or any change in attitude by the public,” Mr Thomson said. “There are just these odd. off-beat characters and I am confident that the police will be able to handle the situation. In fact, some offenders have been apprehended. “There has been a tighen-ing-up of security regulations governing stores of arms and explosives since the burglaries and bombings of service bases began, but to have pickets and patrols and things like that is just not on.”
