Watchman Wins Well

"Th» Press” Special Service DUNEDIN.

Watchman ended a string of minor placings [with a win in the Members’ Handicap, the first leg of the Dunedin .Jockey Club’s T.A.B. Concession double at Wingatui yesterday.

He had only half a neck ■to spare from the fifth favourite, Trelay, which was having his first race since finishing third to Not Again and Far Time in the St Leger Stakes at Trentham in March. Trained at Riccarton by R. B. Taggart for the North Canterbury breeder, Mr L. R. C. MacFarlane, Watchman carried 7-13, taking the full apprentice allowance with D. Reed in the saddle. On the first day of the meeting Watchman beat all but Wairio in the Miss New Zealand Handicap. ' Watchman disputed the [pace with Gay Doctor, while [Trelay had a good run behind the leaders, sharing the trail with Gay Baron on the inner and Mystic Rose three 1 wide.

The Mellay colt was a length clear of the weakening Gay Doctor, which held

third place by only a nose from the favourite, Glamis Lad.

Glamis Lad came from second last on the turn for his placing ahead of Royal Mount and Mystic Rose. Second Leg Beau Bevan rounded off the double with an easy win in the Provincial Handicap. Mr S. Clayton’s Bellborougb gelding was runner-up to Lady Glory in the Birthday Handicap on the first day of the meeting. No-one wanted to make the pace. Beau Bevan pulled his way to the front in the early stages, and jockey D. Sanderson, decided to let him make his own rules out in front Racing down the back stretch he was well clear and still had four lengths on his nearest opponent at the halfmile. He was given a breather soon after and Atlantic Flight, which was followed by Lady Glory (three wide), got within half a length of him into the straight, but when Sanderson asked him for a final effort he sprinted away two lengths clear at the post. Atlantic Flight held second by a length and a half from Opstan with a similar margin to the favourite, Lady Glory, and half a length to Kurwood.
