FRENCH OPEN
Richey Has Revenge
(N.Z.P.A -Rtuter—Copyright) PARIS.
The American, C. Richey, prevented a European monoply of the men’s singles in the French open tennis championships yesterday, beating the top-seeded Rumanian, 1. Nastase, in the quarter-finals. Richey scored a 7-5, 9-7, 4-6, 6-3, win against an apparently jaded Nastase, avenging his semi-final defeat by Nastase in the Rome open in April. He played a more aggressive game and was always in control, moving the ball about the court well, to set up winning volleys. The other American in the quarter-finals, A. R. Ashe, was beaten by Z. Franulovic (Jugoslavia), 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, 4-6, 6-3. The women’s singles quar-ter-finals to be played today are: Mrs V. Vopickova (Czechoslovakia), whose brother, J. Kodes, is already in the men’s semi-finals, v. Miss J. Heldman (United States), Miss K. Krantzcke (Australia) v. Miss V. Wade (Britain), Mrs M. Court (Australia) v. Miss R. Casals United States), Mrs B. J. King (United States) v. Miss H. Nlessen (West Germany).
