Former Boxing Champ. Dead
(N.%. Press Assn.-rCepyright) SAN DIEGO (California). A former world bantamweight boxing champion, Manuel Ortiz, died on Sunday of cirrhosis at San Diego Naval Hospital. He was 53. Ortiz, from California, won 92 bouts, 45 by knock-out, lost 27, and. fought three draws in his 18-year ring career which ended on December 10, 1955.
He captured the 1181 b title by outpointing Lousallca in a 12-round contest on August 7, 1942. He successfully defended his title eight times in 1943, four times in 1944 and, after his discharge from the United States Army, three more times in 1946.
He finally lost the title to Harold Dade in a 15-round bout on January 6, 1947, regained it on March 11 with a 15-round decision. and lost it for good on May 31, 1950, to Vic Toweel, |n Johannesburg, South Africa.
