Canterbury Regains Table Tennis Cup

Canterbury regained the Rein Cup when it beat Otago; South Canterbury, and Southland in an annual quadrangular table tennis tournament at Invercargill on the week-end.

Otago was without G. Murphy and the Fogarty sisters, who are still 4n Australia with the New Zealand Universities team. The Mai-: aysians, Wong Loke Sim and, Wong Chee Kong, added strength to the Canterbury team.

Canterbury beat Otago 17-7, the men winning 8-4, and the women 9-3.

In the men’s contest, both Wong and Kong beat G. Williams, but they were unable to match the- play of the former New Zealand champion, B. A. Foster, and were beaten in straight sets. Quick counter-hitting and well-angled drives enabled G. R. Saunders to beat the highly ranked Y. Kwong (Otago) but Saunders was later beaten in a hard-hitting game with M. Duffy.

J. Armstrong (Canterbury) did not experience any difficulty with Duffy, but lost to Kwong in straight games. Miss M. Green, Mrs T. May, and Mrs J. G. Green won both

their singles matches for Canterbury. Otago’s only victory in the singles was when Mrs ,R. Sutherland beat the promising Miss B. Taylor. In the other contests Canterbury was never extended, beating South Canterbury and Southland, both 24-0. Canterbury 17, Otago T Men.— Wong Chee Kang lost to B. A. Foster. 15-21, 12-21; beat G.
