OBITUARY
Mr P. T. Tikao Barrett Mr P. T. Tikao-Barrett, M.C., who died on Friday at Maketu in the Bay of Plenty, was the first Maori Welfare Officer in the South Island and was also one of the first South Island Maoris to enlist in World War 11. He was 55. M r Tikao-Barrett, who was a grandson of Tione Taare Tikao of Rapaki, one of the ■ most influential South Island 1 Maori chiefs, was educated at Rapaki and Lyttelton. He served with the Maori Battalion in the Middle Bast, attaining the rank of lieutenant and earning the Military Cross for gallantry in the field. He was wounded in 1942 and the following year was chosen to contest the Southern Maori seat for the National Party. After the war Mr TikaoBarrett was appointed the first Maori Welfare Officer for the district comprising the South Island and extending up to Napier. He was also closely associated with Methodist Maori Mission work and was involved in the setting up of a Maori boys’ hostel in Wellington. Latterly he worked for the Forestry Department at the; Kaingaroa Forest.
